CBSBB Skill Based Programs

To augment our mentoring andcounseling programs, CBSBB has developed a number of skill-based programs that address the specific needs of girls and boys. These programs run throughout the school year and empower adolescents with skills to help them succeed in the future.

Participants have the opportunity to meet and shadow women in the workforce and compete for summer internships.

 Boys Power Programs

Challenge The Norm (CTN)

This is a violence reduction program for high school boys. CBSBB's program aims to teach boys how to feel proud and powerful without the use of violence. We help participants re-define the stereotypical ideals of masulinity and increase their self-esteem by teaching them non-phyisical strategies in dealing with emotions. The program concludes with a project chosen and implemented by the participants to help foster gender equity, healthy self image and a reduction in violence within the community.

The Gender Project

Through the "Gender Project" gender equity program, CBSBB encourages participants to think about gender in context of race, class and culture and improve communication between sexes. In particular, activities in the program focus on understanding stereotypes and how they are perpetuated and influenced by family, social groups, and urban culture.

Early Fatherhood

CBSBB has developed a curriculum for this project to educate boys about the consequences and responsibilities of fatherhood. It will explore the negative aspects of having children at a young age and the positive reward of prepared fathering. The program will focus on boys' relationships with their own fathers and the positive aspects of these connections. In addition, boys will be taught skills related to financial literacy, goal setting and attainment, and household management.

Co-Ed Program

Focus on College and University Success (FOCUS)

This is a college exploration and preperation program for high school students. CBSBB takes a holistic approach in preparing girls and boys for college-involving parents, mentors, peer and staff. FOCUS offers trips to colleges in the tri-state area and help with financial aid. In addition, the participating youth are paired up with the CBSBB alumni who serve as email buddies to mentor them through the college application process.
