Over a century of experience has taught Catholic Big Sisters & Big Brothers that mentoring relationships are most effective when they are part of a program that provides comprehensive supportive services.  CBSBB has created an innovative comprehensive service model that, in addition to direct support and training for all mentors, offers crisis counseling and skill building/college bound workshops and activities to its youth and their families.

CBSBB serves children ages 7-17, from low-income, mostly first generation immigrant families.  Over 70% of the families we work with are headed by single mothers; 50% of the parents are unemployed or underemployed, and 70% live below the poverty line.  Our families come from all neighborhoods in the four larger boroughs, with particular concentrations in the Lower East Side, Brooklyn, Harlem and the South Bronx.  Client families identify themselves as 53% Hispanic, 31% African-American, 14% multi-ethnic/bi-racial, 1% Asian, and 1% Caucasian. Services are offered to all families without regard to religion or church affiliation.
