We change lives, one Little at a time

Thank you for your interest in enrolling your child to become a CBSBB youth. We hope this will be the beginning of a long relationship, not only with a mentor, but also with our organization.

At Catholic Big Sisters and Big Brothers, we believe mentoring should be both fun and transformative.  With over 110 years of experience, CBSBB has developed a unique model of mentoring to ensure quality match relationships between youth and adult mentors.  Our unique model recognizes that mentoring involves more than a Little (youth) and a Big (adult mentor):  the Little’s family and our agency are just as important in establishing a successful relationship between your child and their new adult friend.  We promote open communication and collaboration among all involved so that we can best support the match and, ultimately, your child to achieve his or her full potential.

After completing the application process, it can take several months for your child to be matched with a mentor. We like to carefully review our volunteers to ensure that we make the best possible match. Wait times vary and can be longer for boys.

If you have additional questions that are not covered here, please do not hesitate to contact us at 212-475-3291 ext. 501 or families@cbsbb.org.

We look forward to working with you!

Applying Online

There are 3 phases to our application process. Completing one phase does not guarantee your family will move to the next phase as we want to make sure we’re the right organization for you; if not, we’ll work with you to find one that is. You may also decide at any point that our organization does not seem like the right fit for you and your family. We will do everything we can to let you know whether or not you will be invited to the next application phase as soon as possible out of respect for your time.

Phase 1: Complete Mentoring Application and Submit Online → Once you’ve completed our online application, we will review it and a staff person will call you to ask additional questions, if necessary, as well as answer any questions you may have. We will determine together whether you’ll move on to the next phase: Intake. If not, we’ll assist you in finding another organization that would be a better fit.

Phase 2: Intake → Family/Little will participate in an intake meeting at CBSBB.

The purpose of these family sessions is to:

  • Get to know your child and your family in the context of your own family and cultural experiences (though this relationship is for your child, the whole family will be involved and impacted by a “new member of the family”).
  • Help us determine what kind of mentor would be the best fit for your child.
  • Address any family matters that could get in the way of your child’s mentoring relationship.

Phase 3: Your family will participate in a final meeting with a Mentoring Coordinator so that you may meet the person who will match your child with a mentor.
