Jessica Castillo and her family have been connected with our agency for over three years. She was matched with a Big Sister in 2012, but the match closed after a year and a half due to the Big’s relocation to the west coast.Jessica is now in her third year at St. John’s University where she is a pre-med candidate, majoring in Biology, and receiving CBSBB’s Kathryn T. Riley Scholarship. Jessica has all the qualities of a future superstar: she is smart, enthusiastic, hardworking, and goal oriented. Jessica is the middle child of three and the first in her family to attend college.
In preparation for her long-term goal of becoming a doctor working with vulnerable populations, she will be volunteering this summer with the Brooklyn Free Clinic, a student run organization out of SUNY Downstate that provides free healthcare to the uninsured in Brooklyn. With the support of CBSBB Board and Leadership Council members, this May she will also be participating in service trip to Panama with a group of medical students through Global Brigades, an international nonprofit bringing sustainable medical development expertise and supplies to under resourced communities.
While in Panama, Jessica will be working alongside local and international doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, translators, and members of the Global Brigades team. Jessica wrote that, “This is an amazing opportunity as I will be taking vitals and patient history in triage, shadowing licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assisting in a pharmacy under a licensed pharmacist.” Jessica’s ultimate goal is to be a doctor. She says that she’d “love to make a difference in this world, and why not start by doing something I’m incredibly passionate about.”
